Linux/FOSS Training and FOSS Policy Workshop 10 to 21 July 2006

  • Are you an ICT professional or practitioner, decision maker to improve the quality of ICT services and products in Ethiopia?
  • Do you feel that access to and use of Free and Open Source Software is very essential to Ethiopia?
  • The Ethiopian Free and Open Source Software Network (EFOSSNET), which is an informal network of ICT professionals, was established in February 2005 to promote the use of Free and Open Source Software in Ethiopia. Since its establishment the network has been engaged in building the capacity of the members through a number of training and networking meetings with support from CATIA (Catalysing Access to ICTs in Africa, a programme funded by DFID) and UNESCO. As part of this programme, EFOSSNET is planning to run three training / workshop events from 10 to 21 July 2006 in Addis Ababa.

  1. FOSS Professional Training


  2. Participants: 20
    Dates: 10-15 July (incl. Saturday), 17-20 July
    Venue: Economic Commission of Africa(ECA)
    Objective:
    • Provide administrator-level expertise for Linux operating system and various server applications that run on it.
    • Enable participants to present main advantages (considerations) for migration to FOSS (to enable participants becoming "ambassadors").

    Target Groups:
    • IT support staff in public and private sectors.
    • e-riders (and similar).
    • IT support providers (private sector or NGOs).
    • IT students.
  3. FOSS Office Training


  4. Participants: 60
    Dates: 10 to 12 July
    Venue: Economic Commission of Africa(ECA)
    Objective:
    • Provide awareness on standard FOSS Office solutions and ability to install, use, and support them on the Windows platform.
    • Basic introduction to the Linux operating system and desktop.

    Target Groups:
    • Multipliers / Catalysts for diffusion of FOSS
      • Those that others rely on for ICT advice.
      • Technical people, but also opinion leaders in civil society, who have sufficient interest to take the course.
    • Advanced users who can become lead users (and spread awareness) in their organisations and outside
    • IT support staff in public and private sectors.
    • e-riders (and similar).
    • IT support providers (private sector or NGOs).
    • IT students.
  5. FOSS Policy Workshop

    Participants: 100
    Dates: 21 July
    Venue: To be confirmed
    Objective:
    • Create policy-level awareness of FOSS.
    • Familiarise participants with advantages / limitations of FOSS.
    • Enable participants to discuss / ask questions / dispell myths.
    • Establish FOSS as a cutting edge (not a second-best) solution.
    • Enable participants to avoid discriminatory tenders / procurement practices.
    • Enable participants to assess how/if their organisations might benefit from supporting and using FOSS.

    Target Groups:
    • Chief Information Officers (public and private sector).
    • Individuals involved in IT procurement (private and public sector).
    • Policy makers.
    • Media.
    • Decision makers from civil society organisations that could act as multipliers.
    • Local IT sector (especially IT services and support).
    • Development aid organisations (for co-funding).
